March Meeting

Nine members of the Silver-Wood W.I. met at the home of Glenna Smith in Guelph. The program was Food Pantries, How Can We Help?  We learned about the Chalmers Community Services Food Pantry in Guelph, where Glenna has volunteered for fifteen years. Each member also shared a recipe that uses "leftovers" and wealso made food donations. The issues of food insecurity, homelessness and poverty is reaching a crisis level.

Eight members of the Silver-Wood Women's Institute me at the home of Glenna Smith for a potluck lunch. After lunch we played a game, shared Christmas stories, poems and a letter. We also had a cookie exchange. What a great way to enjoy two dozen different homemade cookies alongwith the recipes. It was a wonderful day spent with amazing friends, tasty food and laughter!!!

Members of the Silver-Wood W.I. contributed donations for Seniors through our local Links to Care. Along with these toiletries, puzzle books, snacks, winter scarves a a quilt; the members also hand crafted Christmas Cards to send them our best wishes this holiday season.

Safety for Seniors

Nine members of the Silver-Wood W.I. met in the Common Room at 8 Durham Street in Georgetown. Our newest member Nicky Romita received her W.I. pin from Hania White. Two members from the local Ashrove W.I. Branch; Verna Bird and Marian McPhail were introduced and joined us for the evening. Following a brief business meeting our guest speaker Constable Michael Fabac, Senior Inspectorwith Halton Regional Police spoke about Scams and Safety for Seniors. It was very informative and we all learned steps to take when dealing with these ongoing issues.

Needle Felting with Joan

Eight members of the Silver-Wood W.I. met at the home of Joan Matheson for a picnic lunch and then a hands on demonstration of needle felting. It was an enjoyable afternoon of laughs and creativity. Joan is a very talented fibre artist, we were in awe of her crafted animals, birds, framed pictures, snowmen and pumpkins.  With Joan's step by step directions and needle felting tools we each crafted a pumpkin with unique and wonderful facial expressions. Pictured below is Joan demonstrating the needle felting craft and the opposite photo shows our results. 

  


Wellington-Halton 20th District Annual

Eight members of the Silver-Wood W.I. attended the Wellington-Halton Area 20th District Annual in Eden Mills. The theme was: Happy Together.  Silver-Wood was also the Hostess and Caterer for this event with 48 attendees from 6 Branches. Guest speaker was Joe Gray from the organization called S.H.A.R.E. (Sending Help and Resources Everywhere). This group does amazing work helping countries like Haiti, Thailand and Belize with potable water, farming, dairy cows, and education. We also had 6 women in the W.I. from the UK, they were staying with the Coningsby Branch. They had a whirlwind two weeks visiting all the local sights.  It was a great day with singing, business, leaning about ACWW and installation of Officers for the upcoming year.

Indigenous Craft Workshop

Donna Thompson and Annemarie McDonald two members of the  Silver-Wood W.I. branch took part in an Indigenous craft workshop held at the Erland Lee (Museum) Home. We were instructed on how to make a smudging wand and learned how to use it in a smudging ceremony. The wand was made with a turkey barred feather and a few other decorative feathers glued together and wrapped in a piece of leather and tied with decorative beads. The smudging ingredients were sage, sweetgrass, charcoal and aztec tobacco these would be put in a quahog shell and set a light. 




Annual Meeting

Six members of the Silver-Wood branch met at a home on the 6th Line. After a wonderful pot luck supper we conducted our annual meeting which included payment of fees and collection of volunteer hours. Our By-Laws were updated and reports were read from the ROSE  and Tweedsmuir Committee Chairs. May will be a busy month when we cater and host the District Annual.

Congratulations to the Georgetown Citizens of the Year

The honour of Citizen's of the Year was bestowed upon Susan Tupling and her husband Ken Thorn. Susan is a member of our Silver-Wood W.I. branch.  Together with her husband they are very involved in the Georgetown community, their recent work involves bringing two Afghan families to Halton. Pictured below is Susan, Ken and their dog Cali.

March Moments

Nine members of the Silver-Wood W.I. met at Donna Thompson's home for our March meeting. This meeting was also the 72nd Birthday of our Branch which we celebrated with cake, ice cream, fruit along with tea and coffee. The topic of our meeting was Recycling and our members discussed ways they recycled and repurposed many objects about the house. Ideas included reusing mason and peanut butter jars, quilts from fabric scraps and mens shirts, alternate uses for wooden pieces like an old milking stool, painting old saw blades, a zipper tape becomes a bag,  orphaned socks become dusters and old clothes become rags. Our group has wonderful ideas for reducing, recycling and reusing many things.


Holiday Moments

Seven members of the Silver-Wood W.I. met at Glenna Smith's home for a wonderful afternoon of holiday celebrations.  We shared memories and laughter over a nice lunch followed by a cookie exchange.  What a nice way to enjoy two dozen different types of homemade cookies.  We also tried a fundraising gift auction that was very successful.  Gifts included jewellery, baked and canned goods, homemade crafts and tasty food treats.  It was a wonderful day spent with amazing friends, tasty food and great fun.

Eight members of Silver-Wood W.I. and one guest met at the home of Annemarie MacDonald for our September meeting. The program was Natural Burials. Annemarie gave an informative presentation with humour and lots of questions and answers. We all left knowing there is another option for burials. The members also collected toiletries, puzzle books and personnel items for Links to Care. These will distributed to Seniors in our local area.

Picnic in the Park

Six members of the Silver-Wood branch and two spouses met at the Glen Williams Park to enjoy a summer time picnic. We shared a tasty lunch, played picnic games like toss the shoe, catch the ball in a bucket, a card and word games too.  It was a wonderful afternoon spent with great people.

A Visit to St. George

Seven members of the Silver-Wood branch drove to St. George, Ontario and enjoyed a tour of the Hoodless Homestead. Over the course of an hour-long tour, members saw artifacts and heard stories of the Hunter family during the early 1900s. The members had a walk downtown and enjoyed lunch at a local pub. Across the street from the pub was a striking house (photo, right). The members went to go take a closer look and learned it is called Sunnyside. This home was owned by Dr.  E. E. andMrs. Kitchen, who were friends of Adelaide Hoodless. The first meeting of the St. George Women's Institute took place here on January 13, 1903. Mrs. Kitchen was the first local and district president. A very interesting visit to St. George!

Wellington-Halton District 125th Anniversary  1897-2022

Eighty-eight past and present members of the Wellington-Halton Women's Institutes came together on Saturday, June 18, 2022.  We celebrated the 125th Anniversary of the Founding of the First Women's Institute on February 19, 1897 at Stoney Creek, Ontario. This celebration was held in the Aboyne Hall of the Wellington Museum and Archives (invitation photo on left). Everyone enjoyed an Old-Fashioned Tea with dainty sandwiches and marvellous cupcakes. 

Annemarie McDonald (centre photo) from Silver-Wood Branch researched, compiled and edited a commemorative booklet (photo on right) that was distributed to all who attended.  It was a wonderful event and so heartwarming to see friends coming together, sharing stories and chatting over cups of tea. Congratulations for 125 years of continued work, support and education from all the Branches past and present.

Wellington-Halton District Annual

On Wednesday May 26, 2022 eight members of the Silver-Wood branch attended the Wellington-Halton District Annual at the Norval Presbyterian Church. In total six Branches from the District attended. Pictured above is Dana Flemming, District Tweedsmuir Coordinator reading her report.  It was wonderful to meet together as a group, sharing our Covid -19 stories with skits and discussions followed by an enjoyable lunch and a game.

Visit with Carry-On Branch in Palmerston

On Wednesday May 18, 2022 nine members of Silver-Wood spent the day in Palmerston with the members of the Carry-On Branch.  Palmerston was once the hub of the Grand Trunk Railway, trains were featured on benches, the museum, local art work and the stunning overhead walking bridge. We also enjoyed a walk downtown as part of the Barn Quilt Trail. We met the local artist Bonnie Dopfer who was the inspiration behind these historic colourful quilt blocks. The ladies of Carry-On prepared a wonderful lunch and it was so enjoyable to sit, talk and be inspired with their wonderful community activities and fundraising ideas. It was an excellent day for learning, sharing and fellowship.

Nine members of the Silver-Wood Branch met at Glenna Smith's home for our March meeting. After the business part was complete we celebrated this wonderful birthday with cake and coffee followed with a craft for an Easter table favour. It was good to laugh and enjoy each other's company again. Things are looking promising and our meetings can be held in person again.

On Wednesday, December 8, 2021, ten members met at the home of Glenna Smith. Together we shared a Christmas luncheon followed with a small program.  We shared cookie recipes, sang and heard funny stories.  It was so enjoyable to be in each other's company to talk, laugh and catch up. Due to the current Covid 19 uncertainties our meetings for the new year will continue to be on ZOOM.

The members of Silver-Wood W.I. have been holding their meetings virtually during these uncertain times. We've had two speakers, one from the Milton Public Library and the other with the Guide Dogs.  Our July meeting was held outdoors at the Glen Williams Park, having a picnic lunch and playing games. 

Even though we aren't meeting in person, seeing each other over Zoom is always fun and we are staying connected. Visit the home page to see our upcoming programs coming in the New Year.

Great May meeting

Silver-Wood had a great May meeting. Our speaker was Mary Ann Matthews the owner of www.handwriting.ca. Mary Ann is a Certified Graphoanalyst and a Certified Cursive Writing Coach. She gave us some interesting and informative information about ourselves and our character traits that we could discover in our handwriting.

Very Informative September meeting

Our September meeting last week it was well attended by our members and 3 guests. Our speakers were two members of Advanced Tactical Training and Communication Search and Rescue Services, plus a member of the canine division. They are a not for profit volunteer group who have many means at hand to search for missing persons. They gave a very interesting talk about the different ways they have for searching and the different types of training the dogs in the canine unit have.


Great June Meeting

We had a wonderful June meeting with 2 speakers Mary Ann and Edythe from the Vintage Doll Club, who told us about the History of Dolls. They brought along members of their own collections to pass around. Our roll call was to bring your favourite doll or teddy and this was answered by all the members and four guests. Information on these dolls was given to us by Mary Ann and Edythe.

Annual Meeting 2014/15

Once again we have had a wonderful year of interesting and varied meetings. We are planning this coming year so check back on our main page and they soon will be posted. We anticipate another interesting and exciting year with many different topics. Our annual meeting was great success. This year we had High Tea and hats and gloves were worn for the occasion by members and our guests from the Devereaux House board. We would like to mention that Devereaux House are holding a Mothers Day Tea 10th of May 2015. Last night Silver-Wood had a wonderful annual meeting a pot luck dinner which as always was wonderful and plentiful. Followed by our annual meeting. It was well attended by members and several guests and everyone had a good time
